Cruella’s costume designer Jenny Beavan uses her Oscars outfit to defend pay equity

Cruel costume designer Jenny Beavan used her Oscar nomination as a chance to make a statement on the awards show red carpet.

For the occasion, the 11-time Oscar nominee and two-time winner wore a deconstructed tuxedo jacket and a white shirt on which a silhouette, a dove and the words “Naked without us” were hand-painted. The slogan for the protest is that of the Costume Designers Guild movement which fights for “pay equity that lives up to [their] economic and creative value to production”, according to their website. Beavan last won an Oscar for his work on Mad Max: Fury Road six years ago, while making a fashion statement with boots, pants and a skull dazzled biker jacket.

But although she had already won, she Told New York Times journalist Kyle Buchanan on this year’s red carpet that she’s “always nervous.” I had a really bad night where I needed to know where the bathroom was – I’ll stop there. But I’m fine now. I drank water and a dry biscuit.

Earlier this month, Beavan also said vanity lounge that while she’s thrilled to be recognized by the Academy again, she hates dressing up. The costume designer wasn’t the only star on the 2022 Oscars red carpet to use her fashion to make a statement. Jason Momoa accessorized his costume with a blue and yellow Ukraine-themed scarf tucked into his breast pocket. And many stars such as the actress Youn Yuh-jungdirector Pedro Almodóvarand Jamie Lee Curtis arrived wearing blue ribbons pinned to their ensembles. Curtis explained to Associated press that “The tape is about the refugee crisis. This is an incredibly important moment considering what is happening in Ukraine, the movement of human beings around the world. The exodus of human beings is a crucial story for our time. This has happened throughout history, and right now is a pivotal moment. It’s support films that talk about it…these talk about displaced people and that’s important.
