International Women’s Day 2022: Costume designer praised with Stree Shakti Puruskar for making recyclable clothes

Established in 1999, the Nari Shakti Puruskar is the highest civil honor for women in India, which celebrates the efforts and works of individuals and organizations towards the empowerment of women.

As International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world, the recipient of this year’s prestigious award, Sandhya Raman, is truly an exemplary individual who is setting a benchmark in her field both locally and globally.

She has been in the costume design business for over 30 years and her most popular job is creating “recyclable clothing”. These clothing lines, which were created out of Raman’s desire to reduce the waste generated by the fashion industry, are made from discarded cotton garments.

Keeping in mind the rapidly changing trends, these “recyclable garments”, which include jackets, lehangas, etc., are also made reversible to increase their utility and longevity. Apart from this, Sandhya also created a special type of face mask with interchangeable filters called AARMR mask in 2020 to reduce the waste generated by single-use masks.

Speaking to India Today, she said that in today’s world, everything is influenced by trends, just like our appearance. It is therefore necessary that the clothes we wear are not only fashionable and fashionable but also utilitarian, in order to use them in many ways.

In addition to championing the cause of environmental conservation through her work, Sandhya has also provided work opportunities for marginalized communities and people with different abilities.

She has been a proponent of encouraging local artisans and artisans for some time and through her work has tried to introduce many tribal and lesser known textile prints to the world stage.

For her continuous and consistent efforts, she has also been recognized on a global platform by organizations such as India Art Academy, Atlanta, Chicago Dance Academy, etc.
