Peter Miller, who announced last fall that he was taking a break from training, has a coaching debut for the first time since November in the eighth race at Churchill Falls May 29.

Miller, based in Southern California, has Gary Barber’s Respect the code in race eight on Sunday, a $127,000 allocation race. Respect the Code worked at the San Luis Rey training facility, Miller’s longtime base before he left training.

After his hiatus began last fall, others began supervising the horses in his stable, although Miller maintained his involvement and presence in the stable as race manager/owner liaison and horse owner himself. His assistant, Ruben Alvarado, began coaching several of his riders, while other riders were transferred to other coaches.

Miller said May 27 that after his next start at Churchill Downs, he will resume training and racing horses in California, preparing for the Los Alamitos Racetrack summer meet before the race moves to Del Mar. He expects to have around 80 horsepower, while Alvarado becomes his assistant again.

Miller, 55, said he pulled out for personal reasons.

“I was exhausted, mentally and physically,” he said.

He declined to comment on other considerations for which he took a break. On November 18, when he released a statement announcing his hiatus, he ranked 14th in North America in 2021.

According to a California Horse Racing Board spokesperson, Miller is eligible to race and enter horses anywhere.
