Paolo Ballesteros’ Tikbalang design unveiled at Binibining Pilipinas National Costume Show 2022

MANILA, Philippines — The top eight Binibinis who walked the stage at last Saturday’s national costume show held at the New Frontier Theater included contestants with the loudest cheers.

It started with a nostalgic entrance to a favorite childhood memory of chasing after the taho vendor and ended with a succession of crowd-pleasing costumes of gigantic proportions.

Camarines Sur candidate Krizzia Lynn Moreno carries the Bicolanos’ faith and devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia, whom they affectionately call “Ina”.

Designed by Khandie Segovia, the estrellas symbolize their Ina like Stella Matutina or the morning star. Kryzzia also wears a handcrafted rosary by Peter Rey Yap in honor of Mary, the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary.

Diana Joy Pinto exemplifies Taguig City’s melting pot of cultures in acclaimed fashion designer Renee Salud’s sleek and understated woven ensemble.

The Christian martyr virgin and saint, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, served as inspiration for the national costume of Jane Darren Genobisa. The 4th century martyr is the patron saint of Genobisa’s hometown of Carcar City. Designed by Julien Gentica and Alexis Redecio, the green number is filled with kabkab, a species of grass that grows abundantly in Cebu.

After such a parade of holy-inspired costumes, loud cheers were heard as Oriental Mindoro contestant Graciella Sheine Lehmann took the stage in her gigantic all-white Tikbalang costume.

“Eat Bulaga” host Paolo Ballesteros described his creation on his Instagram account a few days before the national costume show.

“This Tikbalang national costume is fashioned with intertwining branches of the Balete tree that form the horse’s head and butterfly sleeves, and hug the body down to its hooves to conceal the creature’s impending presence. Leaves of translucent ghostly white fabric are draped decoratively as his alluring mane and tail dance with the wind as he lurks in the shadows. The body is adorned with lace, white pearls and rhinestones shimmering like diamonds that will captivate anyone who catches a glimpse of this elusive mythical creature,” Paolo explained.

The Binibining Pilipinas 2022 Coronation Party will be held on July 31.
