Strictly Come Dancing’s Kym Marsh has broken her silence after it emerged she had previously had dance training.

The Sun exclusively revealed earlier this week that Kym, 46, had professional dance experience while starring in Saturday Night Fever in London’s West End in 2004.

As Annette, she was seen strutting the stage every night after receiving dance training from top choreographer and former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips.

Now Kym – who previously said she was just “having fun” on stage while in pop group Hear’Say – has opened up about her dance experience, insisting she doesn’t has no advantage in the competition.

She said, “I did a little [of dancing] when I was young, but it was your typical ballet and tap dance thing when I was a kid. I also went to drama school for a year but really only did the basics.

Kym continued, “Then during my time with Hear’Say, I found the
really hard dance element, we did a tour and doing all the dance routines for it was tricky! The choreographer made fun of me because I always said ‘I can’t do it’.”

As for her stage turn, she added: “I was in Saturday Night Fever for six months in the West End, but I had a role that required little
dancing, and it was kind of on purpose.

“So not a lot of experience, a little, but not enough to
think of myself as a dancer.”

Strict judge Craig Revel Horwood added fuel to the dance experience row earlier this week after claiming Kym had danced before.

Craig, 57, advised her to do well in Strictly this year because she already knows her way around a dance floor.

In an interview with Best magazine, he gave his thoughts on this year’s celebrity nominees, saying, “Kym Marsh has danced before and I think she’ll fit in well.”

Another source close to Kym, however, played down the level of dance training she had.

They insisted: “Arlene ran the show but she and Kym had a separate choreographer to teach the dance routines. Kym’s character only had a few little dance routines choreographed, and that was also 18 years ago. , so it’s not going to give Kym any kind of unfair advantage.”

Other contenders for Strictly this year, such as Loose Women’s Kaye Adams, 59, and actor Will Mellor, 46, have no professional dancefloor background and no dance experience.

Kym, who played Coronation Street’s Michelle Connor from 2006 to 2019, also admitted last month that she started dancing lessons aged four.

She told Cheshire Life magazine: “I loved acting from a very young age. I went to dance school from the age of four, but my parents only realized I could sing. at the age of ten.

Kym also confessed that the producers of the reality TV series Popstars specifically requested that auditionees should be able to “sing and dance”.
