Tobey Maguire Explains What’s So Special About His New Spider-Man Costume

0

Just weeks away from its home release, Marvel and Sony Spider-Man: No Coming Home is firmly in the public eye, despite having been a consistent popular figure over the past couple of years. Casting Tom Holland in a movie starring Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and five former villains set the comic book movie world on fire as the movie broke records at every turn.

Part of what made No coming home one such visual spectacle was the film’s costumes paying homage to the three generations of live-action Spider-Men, as well as other similar homages. The five villains entered the game wearing the looks they used in their original outings, barring some MCU upgrades, while the three Spider-Men did the same with their classic red and blue costumes.

Getting these costumes was especially important for the manufacturing team No coming home, especially considering how monumental it was to have all three heroes in one movie. Now, in the run-up to the threequel’s home release, the cast themselves are sharing insight into how much it helped their own performances, too.

The official Spider-Man: No Coming Home Twitter shared a 71-second video featuring an interview with Spider-Man actors Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.

In the tease, Garfield and Holland joked that the three of them were dancing and having fun in their costumes while filming together:

Garfield: “We just had a little dance in the costume. We had a little hug.”

Holland: “I like doing a shoot with two guys in lycra.”

Maguire went on to share how much easier it was for him to find his character again once he fully adapted as Spider-Man again. Although he admitted it was “a challenge sometimes” getting in and out, he felt more comfortable in the role the more time he spent wearing a new version of his classic costume:

“Costume can definitely be a challenge at times when you have to put it all on. But then getting comfortable in it there’s something funny about it, it just helps as an actor when you put your costume on. , you start to feel more and embody it more. I’m still processing, everything is still happening, I’m catching up.

The trio then joked again about how they’re all handling the event, with Garfield noting how Maguire got on the bandwagon pretty quickly.

Holland: “It just happened.”

Garfield: “Objectively, you got pretty free pretty quickly.”

Maguire: “It’s true.”

Holland noted that Maguire seemed to get comfortable pretty quickly, for which Maguire admitted he really had no explanation:

Holland: “You’ve started to feel right at home.”

Garfield: “You were dancing pretty fast.”

Maguire: “I did, yeah. I have no explanation for it, it just did.”

Any actor in the business becomes progressively more comfortable with their role the longer they wear the costume, which is especially the case with costumes used in superhero movies. For Maguire, it was almost like riding a bike as he returned to the iconic role of Spider-Man for the first time in over a decade.

While superhero costumes are generally notoriously difficult to get in and out of, they are a staple of modern cinema, especially when movies use real costumes rather than something created by CGI. Play as Spider-Man in a movie as big as No coming home is a particularly daunting task, especially given these unique circumstances, but it all seemed to melt away quickly for the OG actor.

Looking at how much work Marvel and Sony have done to bring the worlds of Maguire and Garfield into the MCU, it’s something special how easily Maguire was able to slip back into his Spidey form. It’s unclear if he’ll be back for more action, but even seeing him once again in costume was a moment that will never be forgotten, for Maguire or the fans.

Spider-Man: No Coming Home is playing in theaters and gearing up for its home release on March 22, 2022.
