Vaca FD will perform practice burns at Callen Hill this week and next – The Vacaville Reporter

The Vacaville Fire Department plans to conduct wilderness practice burns on Tuesday, Thursday and May 27 on Callen Hill, it was announced.

Training will begin at 8 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. each day, department spokesman Dustin Kuntz said in a news release.

No road closures are expected during the training, he added in the prepared statement.

The drills, scheduled for the hilly area between Callen Street and Allison Drive, are intended to train firefighters in the use of “shooting operations and firefighter skills for our recruiting academy,” Kuntz added.

This burn will allow other nearby fire departments to practice together in a controlled setting while clearing approximately 15 acres of grass. Smoke will be visible around town and from Interstate 80 and 505, he noted, adding that four to five engines will be on site during the training.

Residents of Vacaville may see multiple columns of smoke throughout the day during various burning periods. Residents should expect drift smoke in the Callen and Browns Valley areas. This is normal and will depend on the wind direction on the day, and people sensitive to smoke should stay indoors with doors and windows closed, Kuntz said.

The weather will be closely monitored before the exercise. Prescribed burns will only occur if wind, humidity and temperature are within acceptable limits, and live updates will be provided through the Vacaville Fire Department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, Kuntz said.
