It’s no secret that The Masked Singer in the United States is known for having some of the best costumes of any international franchise show. Their former costume designer Marina Toybina helped them get into the competition and earn their rightful title in the franchise.
let’s be honest, The Masked Singer is everyone’s guilty pleasure. In the same way that we like to guess the artists, we don’t get tired of crazy costumes either. Each season is more intense than the previous one and offers new well-designed costumes to dress up the celebrities. Toybina is gone The Masked Singer after the conclusion of the series’ sixth season.
On January 14, 2022, the costume designer took to Instagram to acknowledge that season six was her last with the show. In the same message, she wished her former team good luck for the upcoming season. Fans took to the comments section of the creators’ post to thank her for the six seasons on the show.
Who was Toybina before The Masked Singer?
Toybina has been styling and profiling for a while now, creating some of the most bizarre costumes around. She became the queen of costume working with artists like Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Usher, P!NK and many more. Toybina was the creator of Perry’s dancing shark Super Bowl halftime To display.
Prior to The Masked Singer, Toybina had worked as a costume designer for The X Factor (seasons 1 to 3), So you think you can dance (seasons 10 to 16), dance world (seasons 1-3), and more. This Emmy-winning costume designer is still a household name in 2022, even without The Masked Singer. Toybina has received six Emmy Awards during her career. These awards were due to his work on shows like The X Factor, So You Think You Can Dance, The Masked Singer, and more.
Before The Masked Singer, Toybina noted that the series was perfect for her, as it involved the type of costumes she had been doing for 15-20 years before. At the time, the creator shared that her biggest dream was to work on movies and feature films. Toybina said she saw The Masked Singer like not towards this goal.
How Toybina Created the Larger Than Life Costumes
Marina said it took her about 3 weeks to sketch costume ideas. After 20 sketch ideas, she narrowed the list down to 12 with the show’s producers. She then worked with her team to pull the fabrics and tools needed to create the show’s masterpieces. The whole process took about three months, from the first sketch to the final outfit.
Since these suits can rotate quite quickly (depending on eliminations), Toybina described the series itself as bittersweet. Even though each of the costumes is treated as a work of art, she compared seeing them go to having a kid go to college. She Noted that the wardrobe department (like America) doesn’t know when certain characters will be eliminated, so she tends to care most about first appearances.
The former designer previously revealed that the costumes chosen were only those deemed appropriate for the cast. Celebrities themselves have a choice as to who they want to be or to whom they relate. She also shared that The Masked Singer seasons four and five had some of the most creative costumes due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.
The costumes have retained their reputation past 2020 with the stunning designs seen in season six of The Masked Singer. Much of this designer’s costumes come from real world influences to inspire her designs. While she usually shoots movies, like Donnie Darko and Edward Scissorhands for The Rabbit, some influences come from his personal life.
Toybina was born in Russia and moved to the United States when she was 11 years old. Even though Toybina does not have directly attributing the Russian dolls costume to her past, she shared that it was an idea that had been floating around since the second season. Proper casting with The Hansen Brothers is what led the designer to give the design its final look.
Fans of the series don’t like the new designs
Many viewers confess that they tune in The Masked Singer to see the incredible costumes. Toybina created a costume movement by making such beautiful costumes on this series. The Masked Singer faced heavy criticism ahead of the seventh season premiere due to redesigned costumes. Fans think the new designs don’t match Toybina’s sleek and flashy look.
The flurry of criticism came as soon as the series revealed its first Good, the Bad and the Cuddly season preview. Fans have shared less criticism of the outfits since the series premiered in early March, but I think it’s safe to say that Toybina is still missing from the series. The current costumes do the job, but are wildly different from the style of previous costume designers.
